Disclosure: Abivo is our product. Facts about other tools come from their own websites as of October 2026.
The short answer: If your invoices go out with the right paperwork but shippers still pay late, short pay accessorials or go quiet, Abivo takes the follow-up: its AI agent, Kate, calls, texts and emails customers about overdue invoices in your company's name and hands disputes to your team with the full history. If the bottleneck is building invoice packets and getting them through shipper AP portals, look at Upwell or Monk. If you run McLeod, its LoadMaster billing and collections features may cover the basics. If you need cash before the shipper pays, look at factoring from Truckstop or Triumph. If you want an enterprise platform with a transportation practice, look at Billtrust.
Freight receivables break in specific places. A load delivers, but the POD is blurry or missing. Detention and lumper charges were approved by phone and nobody has it in writing. The shipper's AP portal rejects the invoice because the reference number format is wrong. Meanwhile carriers expect to be paid on quick terms. The tools below solve different parts of that chain, so most teams end up pairing a billing or factoring tool with a collections layer.

Monk | Carriers and 3PLs with high invoice volume and many shipper portals | AI agents for portal submission, POD attachment, collections and cash application |

Abivo
Abivo is AI collections software that works on top of the accounting system you already use. Kate, its AI agent, calls, texts and emails shippers and customers about overdue invoices in your company's name. Reminders name the invoice details your customer needs to find the load, such as the PO and billing period, and one message can cover every open invoice on an account, which matters when a shipper owes on dozens of loads.
Kate records promises to pay, disputes and next steps. When a shipper says the detention charge was never approved or asks to speak with a person, Kate hands it to your AR team with the full history. You set the cadence per account or segment, pause any single invoice while a POD is reissued, and flag key accounts so a named owner handles them. Multi-entity teams, such as a brokerage with a separate asset based carrier, keep each subsidiary separate. Abivo works with customers in over 50 countries and in any currency, and connects with QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite, Sage Intacct, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, SAP and Chargebee, or an aging report export.
Abivo does not replace your TMS, accounting system, invoicing, payment processing or cash application. OFS Group, a fire protection contractor, collected $842,518 in its first four months with Abivo (case study). For segment detail see our guides for freight brokers, trucking companies and 3PLs.
Choose it when: invoices are correct and submitted, but nobody has time to call every shipper on every past due load, and you want disputes routed to a person instead of lost in an inbox.
Upwell
Upwell describes itself as accounts receivable automation that "automates freight AR from invoice to payment." Its site says it is built for brokers, carriers and 3PLs, and also serves freight audit and pay providers and factoring companies. It packages and delivers invoices to each customer's format and channel, runs pre-invoice audits against shipper billing rules, and uses AI to read BOLs, PODs, rate confirmations and accessorials. It submits invoices to shipper portals, syncs status and resubmits corrections. It also offers embedded payments, payment reminders, at-risk invoice tracking and cash application. Upwell lists TMS integrations including McLeod, Turvo, Revenova, TMW, Tai, MercuryGate and Aljex.
Choose it when: invoices get rejected or stuck in shipper portals because packets are incomplete or formatted wrong, and you want that fixed before collections ever starts.
Monk
Monk positions its trucking product as "high volume AR automation for carriers and 3PLs." Its site says it handles portal submissions automatically, attaches PODs to invoices, runs collections across large invoice volumes with messages tailored to each customer, and uses AI cash application to match high volume, low dollar payments. Monk calls itself "AI-native, with agents that learn every customer."
Choose it when: you bill thousands of loads a month across many shipper portals and want one AI system for submission, collections and cash application.
McLeod LoadMaster
McLeod describes LoadMaster as a "completely integrated general ledger, accounts receivable, and accounts payable financial system" for trucking. Its Rendition Billing feature tracks required documents and bills customers to their documentation rules. DocumentPower manages freight documents such as signed delivery receipts, with scan stations, mobile capture and email to imaging. Automated Collections, per McLeod, "automatically contacts customers to prompt them for payment" on past due invoices, sending payment summaries by email and asking why invoices are late.
Choose it when: you already run McLeod and want collections reminders inside the same system that holds your loads and documents.
Truckstop Broker Factoring
Truckstop says its broker factoring is "built for freight brokers" and lets you choose which invoices to fund, with no requirement to factor every shipper. The platform creates and sends invoices after delivery, runs shipper follow-up on a schedule and tone you set, and supports carrier quick pay. It connects to your TMS and carrier vetting platform, and reports on invoice status and collections progress.
Choose it when: you need working capital to pay carriers fast and want back office and shipper follow-up bundled with the funding.
Triumph
Triumph describes its factoring as "financing built for freight operations." Carriers submit invoices and get funded, and Triumph collects from the customer afterward, so the carrier does not chase the payment. Approval considers the credit of your customers, and brokers can see which carriers are preapproved for factoring. Triumph also offers back office services for carriers.
Choose it when: you are a carrier that would rather sell the receivable than collect it, and you accept that the factor, not your team, talks to the payer.
Billtrust
Billtrust calls itself a "Cash Generation Platform" that runs invoicing, payments, credit, collections and cash application as one platform. Its transportation page says it handles freight charges, fuel surcharges and accessorials across multi-modal billing, works across freight audit portals and payment channels, and offers collections workflows designed for transportation. Billtrust also lists AI that prioritizes collections accounts.
Choose it when: you are a larger carrier or logistics company replacing several AR tools with one enterprise platform.
How to choose
Start by finding where cash actually gets stuck. Pull 30 recently paid late invoices and tag each with the reason: missing POD, accessorial dispute, portal rejection, shipper slow pay, or nobody followed up. The pattern tells you which category of tool to buy.
Freight AR checklist for your shortlist:
POD and document packet: Does the invoice reach the shipper with BOL, POD, rate confirmation and lumper receipts attached, in the format that shipper requires?
Accessorials and detention: Can you see which accessorial lines are disputed, pause follow-up on that one invoice, and keep chasing the rest of the account?
Shipper AP portals: Who submits to each portal, and who checks whether the invoice was accepted or rejected?
Short pays: When a shipper pays less than billed, is the reason captured and routed to someone who can fix it? Our guide on customer deductions and short payments covers the process.
Factoring: If you factor some customers, can your collections tool exclude those invoices so the shipper does not hear from two parties?
Volume and contacts: Can one message cover every open load on an account, and does the tool know the right AP contact per shipper?
Disputes and promises: Are promises to pay and dispute reasons logged so the next follow-up starts from the last conversation? See promise to pay tracking.
Integration: Does it read from your TMS or accounting system without retyping invoices?
If the problem is... | Start with |
|---|---|
Shippers owe on correct invoices and nobody has time to chase | Abivo |
Invoice packets and portal submissions fail | Upwell or Monk |
You run McLeod and want built in reminders | McLeod LoadMaster |
You need cash to pay carriers before shippers pay | Truckstop or Triumph |
You want one enterprise order to cash platform | Billtrust |
Many brokerages run a billing or factoring tool alongside a collections layer. If your team spends hours on the phone with shippers, read how AI collections calls work, or book a 30-minute demo on your own aging report.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best collections software for freight brokers?
It depends on where payments stall. If invoices are accepted but shippers pay late, an AI collections agent such as Abivo handles follow-up and hands disputes to your team. If invoices get rejected in shipper portals, Upwell or Monk focus on packaging and submission. If you need funding to pay carriers, broker factoring from Truckstop covers that.
Can collections software handle detention and accessorial disputes?
Most tools route the dispute rather than settle it. With Abivo, Kate records the dispute, you can pause that single invoice, and your AR team gets the full history to resolve it with the shipper while the rest of the account stays on cadence.
Should a trucking company use factoring or collections software?
Factoring sells the receivable for faster cash, and the factor usually handles collection. Collections software keeps the relationship and the full invoice value with you. Many carriers factor some customers and collect from the rest themselves.
Does Abivo replace my TMS or accounting system?
No. Abivo works on top of your accounting system and focuses on follow-up on overdue invoices. It does not do invoicing, payment processing or cash application.
Can AI call shippers about overdue freight invoices?
Yes. Abivo's Kate calls, texts and emails customers in your company's name, names the invoice details, and passes anyone who asks to speak with a person to your team. See our overview of logistics and transportation collections.
